The Information Exchange Working Group (IEWG) of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) has published a report to help agencies proactively identify financial transactions likely to be linked to the financing of extreme right-wing terrorism.
The report, FIUs’ Capabilities and Involvement in the Fight against the Financing of Extreme Right-wing Terrorism: State of Play and Perspectives, examines aspects of financing extreme right-wing terrorism and presents key lessons, best practices and representative case examples to help fight this type of criminality.
The information in the report aims to assist the establishment of national strategies and facilitate effective cooperation between FIUs, law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities. It should also help reporting entities better detect extreme right-wing terrorism behaviours.
ERWTF project
The IEWG’s extreme right-wing terrorist financing (ERWTF) project sought to develop and consolidate the strategic intelligence picture associated with payments relating to extreme right-wing groups and individuals.
The data from Egmont Group member FIUs and other sources provided the project team with an understanding of financial transactions suspected to be linked to ERWTF.
Identifying transactions
The indicators and keywords produced by that data are contained in the new report and can be used by FIUs to proactively identify within their own datasets, financial transactions likely to be linked to the financing of extreme right-wing terrorism.
The key findings of this project are expected to enable FIUs to better contribute to efforts to tackle ERWTF and provide law enforcement agencies with more actionable intelligence relating to the movement of funds and the identification of extreme right-wing terrorism.
Jointly-led by the FIUs of the Netherlands and France, the project is the result of collaboration with INTERPOL and FIUs from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Panama, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa and the UK.
